Reed College is a private liberal arts college founded in 1908 in Portland, Oregon. Consistently ranked among the top 100 liberal arts colleges in the US but defying conventional rankings, Reed is one of the most intellectually rigorous colleges in America. Reed gives no grades visible to students during their education, has no varsity sports, requires every student to complete a senior thesis, and produces more Rhodes Scholars per graduate than almost any institution. Reed alumni include Apple co-founder Steve Jobs (who attended but did not graduate) and have produced more Nobel laureates per alumnus than any Ivy League university.

Distinctive Features

  • No Visible Grades — Students receive evaluations but never see letter grades until they leave Reed
  • Senior Thesis — Every student completes a year-long original research thesis — a rarity at a liberal arts college
  • Humanities Program — Year-long required freshman program covering Western civilization from ancient Greece to modern day
  • Rhodes Scholars — More Rhodes Scholars per graduate than nearly any US institution
  • Honor Principle — Student self-governance of academic and social life since 1913
