Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about GPA calculation.

This calculator uses the standard 4.0 GPA scale used by the vast majority of US colleges and universities. A+ and A both equal 4.0, A− equals 3.7, B+ equals 3.3, and so on down to F at 0.0.
GPA is a weighted average. For each course, the grade value is multiplied by the credit hours to get grade points. All grade points are summed, then divided by total credit hours. This means a 4-credit course has more impact on your GPA than a 1-credit course.
A 3.0+ is generally considered good and keeps you in good academic standing. A 3.5+ is excellent and often qualifies for the Dean's List. For graduate school or competitive programs, most institutions expect a 3.3 or higher.
Yes! Simply enter all courses from every semester into the calculator. Because it weights by credit hours, entering courses across multiple terms gives you an accurate cumulative GPA — just as your university calculates it.
Most universities require a minimum 2.0 GPA (a C average) to remain in good academic standing. Falling below this can result in academic probation or suspension. Some programs (engineering, nursing, education) may require a higher minimum — always check your school's specific policy.
Yes, for unweighted high school GPAs this calculator works perfectly. For weighted high school GPAs (where AP or honors classes get a bump to 5.0), you would need to manually enter the boosted grade value — e.g. enter an A in an AP class as 5.0 instead of 4.0.
