Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about estimating college costs.

The sticker price is the published total cost before any financial aid. The net cost is what you actually pay after grants, scholarships, and other free aid are subtracted. Most students pay significantly less than the sticker price — the average net price at 4-year public universities is around $15,000 per year for in-state students after aid.
This estimator shows your out-of-pocket cost after grants and scholarships. Student loans are not subtracted here since they must be repaid. Use our Student Loan Calculator to estimate your monthly repayment after graduation.
College costs have historically increased by 2–4% per year on average, driven by inflation, rising administrative costs, and increased demand. Our estimator includes an annual cost-increase field (default 3%) so your 4-year total reflects realistic projected costs rather than just multiplying year-one costs by four.
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the form used to determine your eligibility for federal grants, loans, and work-study programs. Every student should apply regardless of income — many families who assume they won’t qualify still receive aid. The FAFSA opens each October for the following academic year.
Not necessarily. While private colleges have higher sticker prices, many offer generous institutional aid that can bring your net cost below that of a public out-of-state school. Some elite private universities — like Harvard, MIT, and Princeton — meet 100% of demonstrated financial need, making them free or nearly free for lower-income families.
This estimator covers the main categories: tuition, room & board, books, and personal/transport expenses. It does not include study abroad fees, Greek life dues, health insurance surcharges, parking permits, course-specific lab fees, or laptop/technology requirements. Budget an additional $500–2,000 per year for these extras.
