The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is the oldest health science university in Texas, founded in 1891 in Galveston on the Gulf Coast. UTMB enrolls approximately 3,000 students and operates one of the largest teaching hospitals in the state. The university is nationally recognized for its nursing programs, its Galveston National Laboratory (one of two Level 4 biocontainment labs in the US), and its work in tropical medicine and infectious disease.
