Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) is a private Historically Black Graduate Institution founded in 1966 in the Watts-Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles, named after Dr. Charles R. Drew, the pioneering African American physician who developed blood banking. CDU is federally designated as a Historically Black Graduate Institution and has a mission to train health professionals for underserved communities. The university operates in close partnership with UCLA and the LA County Department of Health Services.
