Fisk University is a private HBCU founded in 1866 in Nashville, Tennessee, immediately after the Civil War. One of the most historically significant HBCUs in America, Fisk is the alma mater of W.E.B. Du Bois and John Lewis, and is the birthplace of the Fisk Jubilee Singers — who in 1871 introduced African American spirituals to the world, saving the university from bankruptcy through their tours of the United States and Europe.
