Shaw University is a private HBCU founded in 1865 in Raleigh — the oldest Historically Black College or University in the Southern United States, established just months after the end of the Civil War. Affiliated with the American Baptist Churches, Shaw enrolls 1,500 students and holds a pivotal place in civil rights history as the site where the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was founded in 1960.
