Southern University and A&M College is a public HBCU founded in 1880 in Baton Rouge — the flagship of the Southern University System, the largest system of public HBCUs in the United States. Enrolling 7,000 students, Southern is a 1890 land-grant institution known for engineering, law (Southern University Law Center — the only law school in Louisiana with an open admissions HBCU mission), nursing, and agriculture programs.
